Targeting the need

There are 73 teachers and 8332 pupils at basic schools within the Lwimba Zone and many additional teachers and pupils at the community schools. All teachers, pupils, and also community members will have access to the resources made available through the ZRC/Library. Each school in the zone will have access to the rotating library collection to ensure books are easily available to all pupils.

In 2004, literacy rates in Zambia were estimated at 68%* and are estimated to be even lower in Lwimba Zone. Literacy levels for the adult population are also particularly low amongst women. There are no libraries in the zone and all schools suffer from a shortage of literature and educational resources. Additionally, there is a need for a meeting space at the ZHS as it is the center for all MOE zonal activity and also often a meeting place for other community based activities. The area recognizes the need and importance of developmental activities and also recognizes illiteracy as an enormous obstacle to development. Teachers, pupils and community members will all benefit from the increased access to information and reading materials. By targeting teachers, pupils, and parents, we hope to combat the factors which contribute to illiteracy on multiple levels.
